When searching for makeup niches, you may be asking yourself, “how can I stand out?” If you do a little more research (and keep reading this post) you’ll find a makeup niche that you can call your own.
The beauty community can be quite intimidating and often referred to as over-saturated. Believe me when I tell you there is always room for more. The industry is growing and changing daily, all you need to do is find strength in what you love.
When I decided to join the beauty community, I struggled to find which beauty category was right for me.
I jumped right into eyeshadow looks, only to realize that was not my strong point.
After many trials, I found my joy and comfort in creative makeup.
It involved painting techniques that were familiar to me and allowed me to play with mixed media.
Below, I’ve created a list of makeup niches that will help you narrow down which category to explore.
1. Skincare
Skincare accounts focus on products that improve the current condition of your skin.
To niche down, you can focus on specific skin types such as oily, dry, acne-prone, etc.
You can also choose to highlight specific information like:
- all-natural
- cruelty-free products
- home remedies using ingredients found right in your kitchen
2. Everyday Makeup
This is where the hashtag #motd (makeup of the day) lives.
This category can be pretty broad but gives a lot of room to put your twist on things when finding your niche.
Everyday makeup usually is what I like to think of as a “go-to” niche in beauty.
If I’m planning to meet up with some friends and looking for a cute simple makeup look, I would search #motd.
These accounts are also pretty reliable when it comes to finding product reviews.
3. Glamour Makeup
Who doesn’t love a little glamor?
These makeup accounts are so entertaining to keep up with. It’s amazing to see someone transform from natural to full glam within secs.
They give us tips on how to enhance our best features and often show techniques used by celebrities.
In this niche, you have to be on top of your game, as this is where you will find the majority of the competition. This niche can cover anything from prom, bridal, to your yearly birthday bash.
4. Creative Makeup
My specialty! This niche is a hidden gem.
As we all know Halloween is a favorite holiday amongst the beauty community. It is also a time where people search for “creative makeup”, looking to find the perfect costume.
I like to think of this niche as expression through makeup.
There are so many different styles, tools, and media that each artist uses, there’s no limit. So, if you love makeup but also want to stay in touch with your artistic side, this may be the niche for you.
5. Cosplay Makeup
Cosplay is short for costume play.
The idea of cosplay is to recreate your favorite characters from head to toe. It’s amazing to see how these artists can change their entire face with the right highlights and shadows.
If your someone who also enjoys fashion this could be a niche to explore. Cosplay also gives you the freedom to use different backgrounds and backdrops.
Because let’s be honest, the beauty community has a bit of a standard for clean white backdrops. Put your touch on things and see where it takes you.
6. SFX Makeup
Getting even deeper into the creative side is SFX (special effects makeup).
This niche uses makeup and prosthetics to create anything from devil horns to the gills of a mermaid. Some of the creative content you’ll find in this niche can be mind-blowing.
As with any area in beauty, practice makes perfect. This niche comes with very specific materials and techniques to create these looks.
If you’re new to this type of makeup YouTube may be a good place for you to start enhancing your skills.
7. Feature Accounts
These accounts are popping up everywhere. Why?
Because isn’t it one of your goals to get featured by one of our favorite brands?
These accounts may have a smaller following but don’t rule them out. Who knows, your favorite brand might end up finding you from a post that came from a featured account.
If you love beauty but have a passion for helping and promote instead of creating this could be the niche for you.
Now that you have a better view of different makeup niches out there, don’t be afraid to try them out and mix things up a bit. It’s the only way you will find out what works for you.
Do your research.
Once you decide on a niche, my advice to you is: follow more accounts in that niche!
Take the time to study your social feeds. Take note of what content similar successful accounts are posting.
Be honest with yourself, try not to get sucked into what everyone else is doing. Your unique skill is what will set you apart from the competition.
As you scroll, use the above categories to help you generally group content on your feed. Which makeup niche do you feel best suits you?
Follow More Makeup Niches
Stop worrying about the number of followers you have. If you create great content, followers will…FOLLOW.
Here’s a little secret: Brands aren’t as concerned with how many followers you have.
They’re more interested in knowing that the ones you DO have are engaging with your content. (Hints your analytics.) Engagement is key.
Reset Your Feed
You are in control of what content shows up on your feed, by the accounts you follow, and what post you interact with.
Following similar accounts will help you:
- find inspiration
- keep you up to date on what’s trending [link]
- show you the content your audience is already engaging with
