One essential to content creation is finding backdrop ideas. No matter what your niche is you have to produce content.
In the beauty industry, you need lots of selfies, portraits, and product photography. Once you decide which platforms work best for you and your brand, you can start creating content.
Starting out, your first thought is most likely to buy backdrop paper. There are many inexpensive options for you to consider. Before we get to the list, here are three factors to think about:
Colors
The use of background colors in this industry is pretty restricted. You should aim for white and neutral tones when you are taking selfies or portrait photos.
The goal is to create content brands can use to promote you and/or their products on THEIR platforms.
Pick your favorite brand, go to their Instagram page and, take a look a the last 9 – 18 post.
You will notice they all have a color theme. Some are consistent and others change their colors based on their products.
As a beginner, it’s more beneficial to stick to the basics. You don’t want to miss out on opportunities because you went with the wrong backdrop color.
If your platform of choice is Youtube, you have more freedom to change up the background color as much as you want. You can choose colors that match your outfit/makeup or complement your skin tone.
Materials
When setting up your workstation to create content, timing is everything! If you do not have a specific area for your craft, then you know how time-consuming it can be to set up.
Both paper and fabric can get wrinkled when in storage. You may find yourself cutting off wrinkled ends or ironing your fabric, all before hanging it up.
Think of some strategic ways to store your backdrops so you can save time when setting up.
Quick Tips:
Use a small piece of tape to keep your rolled-up backdrop in place.
Hang fabrics on hangers.
Measurements
Standard backdrops will give you size options tailored to the backdrop stand. If want to be a savvy DIYer, you going to have to guesstimate the size you need.
If you’re using the same backdrop ideas for different platforms, remember each site has different posting sizes. A good rule is to have at least 2 yards.

1. Backdrop
If you have space and storage the easiest route is to buy a backdrop. Amazon has a large variety of colors and materials for reasonable prices. You can even find bundles that will come with a stand, clips, and a storage bag.
2. Green Screen
Yes, this is the same as a normal backdrop, but the magic is the bright green color. Most editing apps have a green screen effect. This allows you to change your background to ANYTHING you want.
If you want a mansion or a background at Coachella. A green screen can make it happen.
3. Curtains
Another simple option is curtains! There are so many different patterns and colors to choose from.
Curtains can give your content a unique look and add some texture to your background. Next time you’re in Walmart or Target take a stroll down the home decor isles see what you find.
Quick Tip: Pay attention to the curtain length. Some curtains are on the shorter side and will only cover the wall up to your shoulders. Aim for longer lengths.
4. Plain Wall
Find a wall that is free of clutter, and paint it. A bucket of paint will cost you about $20. You can keep it plain, or add physical props like plants or those IKEA shelves that everyone loves.
Keep your backgrounds as minimalistic as possible. You want your audience to focus on the subject.
5. Closet Door
This is one I use in my bedroom, and the best part is I don’t have to set it up! Similar concept to choosing a wall. Using a closet allows you to paint a smaller section without having to change any decor. Most closet doors have a wooden texture which will add some dimension to your background as well.
6. Lights
Christmas lights, candles, LED lights. When paired with a blurred camera effect, lights can create a sparkly, starry night look.
7. Poster Paper
Poster paper is one of the cheapest yet still effective options that I’ve come across. Take a trip to your local craft store and ask for poster paper rolls. Crafts stores like Micheals have an assortment of colors for under $10.
8. Party Decorations
I’ve seen this idea used on Youtube and the results were actually surprising. You can find plastic table cloths and door streamers from the dollar store starting at $1.00! This idea is perfect for a product launch, birthday, or holiday. Try layering to the two, get creative.
9. Your Bedroom
Using your bedroom as a “backdrop” is an easy option that many people overlook. Your bedroom is a reflection of you.
Your audience is getting a sneak peep into your at-home personal life. It’s a quick way to make a connection and make you more relatable.
Add some plants, buy some LED strip lights, and most important don’t forget to clean up your room.
10. Mother Nature
If your content works more with products, this is an option for you.
Not only is it free and accessible 24/7 but you can work with natural lighting. Blue skies and green grass gives sure a beautiful contrasting background.
Here a few options you can use when hanging your new backdrops ideas:
